NAOMI (HALLOWELL) BAILEY

Naomi (Hallowell) Bailey Age, 91 of Brandywine Hills, Wilmington, passed away at home Saturday morning, February 20, 2010. Naomi was born April 8, 1918 in Wilmington, DE and was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Vernon G Bailey. She was also preceded in death by her brother, William Elston Hallowell. Naomi was the daughter of Jennie Marie (Stevens) and John W.H. Hallowell, Jr. and was a lifelong resident of Wilmington, born at her home on 1817 Pine Street. Her family moved shortly to 609 East 22nd Street where her brother was born.She then moved to Market Street in 1927 and into Brandywine Hills in 1957. Naomi was in the first class to attend George Gray School and was in the first June Graduating Class of P.S. DuPont High School in 1936. After graduating from Wilmington Beauty School she worked in Kennard’s Dept. Store and then owned a Beauty Shop at 7th & King Streets. She later ran a real estate business and ran for State Representative for the 1st District in Delaware. She was very active in East Lake Methodist Episcopal Church which she attended since she was a child and was married there January 10, 1942. She played the piano for church services and other events, served as the President of the Women’s Society and was a top fund raiser for the church and for the Methodist Country House’s Fall Festivals. She was active in the Anniversary Services and served as Vice President of the Trustees, donating the current building for the church. Her grandfather John W. Hallowell owned the first Chevrolet Dealership in the country in 1914 which fueled her love of Chevrolets. She enjoyed her trips to Federalsburg, Rehoboth Beach and St. Petersburg, Florida. She is survived by her twin sons Vernon and John, whom she thought were her greatest accomplishments. She is also survived by her daughters-in-law, Janet Mae and Denise and 8 Grandchildren, John, Daniel, Christina, Stephanie, Vernon, James Elwood, Samuel and Jacob and one great-grandchild, Joshua. A funeral service will be held at MCCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike, Tallyville at 10:30 a.m. on Monday March 1, where friends are invited to call after 8:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Namoi’s memory may be sent to East Lake Methodist Episcopal Church, 2908 North Market Street, Wilmington, DE 19802
