JOSEPH PHILLIPS
Joseph E. Phillips, Sr., age 74, of Wilmington, DE entered into the arms of our Lord on November 24, 2009 at the Delaware Hospice Center, surrounded by loving family members. Joe lost a very courageous 9-year battle with cancer.
Joe was a 1953 graduate of P.S. duPont High School. He was employed for 45 years at Strawbridge and Clothier, Wilmington, as the manager of the men’s clothing department, retiring in July 1996. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America, and was a 5 year scout master for BSA Troop 369, New Castle in the early 1970’s. Joe was a very talented craftsman in any type of home renovations, and he took great pride in his work. He also enjoyed hiking and cleaning his car daily. Joe was always available to help his family and friends. He was a great husband, father, and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by all.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, Erwin E. and Harriet A. Phillips; brothers, Fred, Oren Burt, and William; and sister Gladys. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Dolores; four sons, Joseph E. Jr., James E. (Sharon), Kenneth O., and William T., all of Wilmington; 9 cherished grandchildren, Kenneth Jr., Christina, Candice, Corey, Nicole, Dylan, Sierra, Savannah, and Travis; 1 great-granddaughter, Lila; and 2 sisters, Harriet Floyd and Shirley Dill, both of Wilmington.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 30, 2009 at 11 am in the chapel at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE 19720. Friends are invited to call after 10 am. Interment will follow the service in the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family asks contributions be made in Joe’s name to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810.
